About us

Bayston Hill

The quarry is situated on the outskirts of Bayston Hill, a large village and civil parish in central Shropshire, England. The village is 3 miles south of the county town Shrewsbury and located on the main A49 road, the Shrewsbury to Hereford road.

A quarry has been at this site since around 1752. The 30ha site is largely hidden from public view by the rolling rural landscape.

The quarry produces roadstone, a rough-surfaced gritstone that is particularly suited for making road surfaces because it is hard and durable but also has a resistance to polishing on the road.

Aggregate from the quarry was used in the surfacing of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix’s Yas Marina circuit, which opened in 2009.

In addition to conventional hot mixed asphalt, Bayston Hill makes warm mix and cold mix asphalts that have lower carbon footprints. The cold mixed asphalts are typically bagged for sale through builders’ merchants and DIY stores.

Reusing old asphalt and rubber tyres

To supplement stone from the quarry and to maximise aggregate recycling, the site operates under an exemption certificate from the Waste Management Regulations. This means that unwanted asphalt returned by our customers and old asphalt removed from roads is reprocessed on-site and reused in new asphalt. Old rail ballast and foundry sand are also put into certain asphalt mixes. This ensures that Bayston Hill stone is used carefully and sustainably, and so that we can help support Government targets to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill. Old tyres are minced up and brought to and they too can be added to some asphalt mixes.

Health and safety

Protecting the safety, health and wellbeing of our employees, contractors and those around us is a core value of our business. We work in potentially hazardous environments so it’s important that everyone understands how to go about their jobs safely.

We believe that no task is so important that it can’t be done safely and through measurement and learning we can continuously improve our performance. Everyone working at Bayston Hill is expected to work in a safe, responsible manner and to challenge unsafe behaviour.

We give everyone on site a thorough induction so they know our behavioural expectations and how to stay safe. We are very careful to separate out traffic and pedestrian movements, and we undertake risk assessments before each activity so that we know the risks involved and can prepare for them.

We measure our safety record by recording everything from a Near Miss (Unsafe Act or Condition), First Aid Treatment, Medical Injuries, and incidents that mean someone has to take time off work, known as a Lost Time Injury (LTI), so we can learn and avoid them altogether in the future.

On site, everyone outside the office buildings must wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

The Mineral Products Association’s (MPA) has a Safe Quarry hub where you can access further information.
